Coral Gables, FL - When students return for classes at the University of Miami, there will be a new dining option for those who want top quality strictly Kosher food. The Oasis, located on the ground floor of the Whitten University Center, will serve as a retail food establishment, offering a variety of Glatt Kosher food from breakfast to dinner, and for takeout.

The diverse menu features traditional breakfast items such as fresh baked bagels with a “shmear” of smoked salmon cream cheese, egg sandwiches, and blintzes, and for lunch and dinner, deli specialties including corned beef, roast beef, pastrami, turkey pastrami, tuna, egg and chicken salad, falafel, roasted red pepper hummus, salads, and old-fashioned chicken soup with matzo ball. Specialty sandwiches can be made on Lavash, pita bread, or as a wrap. Side dishes include potato and spinach knishes, and potato pancakes served with apple sauce or sour cream. All platters and most menu items are made to order. A variety of Kosher dessert items including the classic black and white cookie will be offered.

In order to follow strict Kosher dietary laws, The Oasis food will be operated under the authority of the University of Miami Rabbinical Association.

“This is the most exciting and unique retail dining venue at the University in over 10 years,” said Mel Tenen, assistant vice president for auxiliary services at UM. At 3,700 square feet, The Oasis will be the largest Glatt Kosher retail venue on any college or university campus in the country.

“Oasis will be a new highlight on campus for all students,” said Pat Whitely, Vice President for Student Affairs, who added that the restaurant will have mass appeal, not just for Jewish and Muslim students who observe Kosher and halal dietary laws.

In fact, the new restaurant make it possible for the University to offer students a new “8 Kosher Plus” dining plan, in which eight prepaid meals per week may be used in residential dining halls, 200 dining dollars per semester to use at most retail locations on campus and 500 Oasis dollars per semester provided to students at a major discount.

The Oasis will be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Do you have to be a student there or connected with the school, such as a visitor, etc in order to patronize the place? I wouldn't mind taking a drive to check the place out.

UM is the home base of the JCLE Under the guidance of Rabbi Sprung and local Miami Askanim namely Marcos Lapcuic is a Kiruv organization that over the past 7 years has produced BH 18 married couples inaddition several hundred Balei Teshuva, that were previously Nidchey Yisroel. The JCLE's presence on campus at UM makes it the preminant Orthodox Jewsih organization at UM.
Many alumni that went there years ago that visit today well with tears in thier eyes seeing the shiurim, davening tefilos and programs as an alternative on campus rather than the partying and L'havdil inter-mingling that is predominant on college campus. The students are housed on Shabbosim at the homes local Frum families.

This resteraunt will be a tremendous asset to the JCLE students!

my simple special jewish brethren,

the 5pm friday business is obviously for summer hours. the winter hours will be adjusted accordingly.
as for the hechsher, they are still finalizing supervision. after the recent food scandals with the KM and other local organizations, they are trying to ascertain the best kashrut agency who can handle an eatery of large size while not charging outrageous certification prices so the food costs can be student budget sensitive.
