New York - The Jewish Press urges voters in the 64th Assembly District in Lower Manhattan to reaffirm their support for Assemblyman Sheldon Silver in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, September 9.

Mr. Silver is an extraordinarily able elected official who also serves as speaker of the New York State Assembly. He has represented the 64th district in an exemplary fashion, played an invaluable role in the growth and maintenance of its infrastructure, and tirelessly serves the needs of all segments of its diverse, vibrant population. Indeed, his advocacy for seniors and the disadvantaged has been nothing short of remarkable.

As speaker, Mr. Silver has fought for the interests of all New Yorkers in epic controversies that defy easy solution, and on issues ranging from housing and health care to improving bus and subway service, he's gotten results. In the course of these efforts he has often been the target of personal invective from those who, not being able to prevail on the merits, sought to ridicule some of his positions. They have often done so in collaboration with elements of a local media all too eager to demonize an elected official who refused to play by their elitist rules and still came out on top. This despite the fact that, as polls indicated, his positions more often than not reflected the views of most New Yorkers and, as it often later became apparent, sound judgment.

The Jewish community of the Lower East Side has a special reason to demonstrate its support for Speaker Silver. Without doubt, he has transformed the way Jewish New Yorkers are able to go about their daily lives while remaining true to their religious convictions. Legal protection for Sabbath observers in employment, education, and professional licensing has been one of his signature achievements. He has also been a pioneer in securing various legal protections for agunot, religious objections to autopsies, religious considerations in defining death, religious considerations in the regulation of organ donations, and many more. Further, his work in New York has served as the model for similar legislation in other states across America.

Residents of Lower Manhattan have a unique opportunity to express their support for this rare kind of public service. They should come out on September 9 and vote for Assemblyman Sheldon Silver.

Yokum Purkon: There is no doubt that Shelly Silver takes partisan positions a number of which I personally disagree, however in fairness, everyone should look at his efforts for the Jewish Community and for the State in its totality.

There has never been a politician who has done more for his constituancy and for the greater public than Shelly. Disagree with him on specific issues all you'd like, but honesty requires all of us to acknowledge his accomplishments on our behalf.

Shelly Silver is the best of the candidates for that seat and he is the Senior man in the State Senate.
If another observant jew could take his place kol hakovod - but he is running against a bigger leftist.

shelly silver is getting a run for his money. it's not really about his district- although he needs their votes.
it seems albany is getting tired of him & would like a change of leadership. you can be assured that his opponent is getting big time support from those with interst in seeing him out of albany.
bloomberg HATES his guts. I hear the governer ain't too fond of him either. for what it's worth the agudah leadership is pretty peeved at him too? but don't expect to read about that in the yated.

To Don: As a reader of the Jewish Press who thinks most of the paper is actually very well-written, I'd like you to give me some examples of the bad writing you mentioned. Maybe that was the case years ago, but not now. And most of the well-written stuff is original, not from the internet. The long front page features, the editorials (whether I agree with them or not), the media column, Rabbi Hollander, the Rebbetzin (again, whether I agree with her or not), the interviews theey have almost every week such as Rabbi Angel this week etc. -- this is not pulled from thr internet. Stop insulting thoe of us who like the Jewish Press. It's the only frum paper that's holding the line against the chumra madness that has taken over much of the frum oilam.

It is well known that Mr. Silver is of counsel to the one of the largest plaintiff malpractice firms in the state. He refuses to disclose how much he makes from that firm. It is rumored to be $500,000. He has blocked any attempt to introduce tort reform in the legislature. He claims it is not a conflict of interest! His actions are a clear conflict of interest and dishonest. At the same time he is harming healthcare and these actions result in increased costs. The public will continue to pay more and more for healtcare as the costs of a 15% increase in malpractice insurance are passed on.
