Pvt. Michael Handman, 20, who has just completed his fifth week of basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, was recently released from a hospital where he was treated for a concussion, facial wounds, and severe oral injuries following the attack, according to the boy’s father, Jonathan Handman.
The soldier’s father said he received a disturbing telephone call last week from his son’s commanding officer “to tell me that my son is OK and out of the hospital.”
“Apparently he got his clocked cleaned and beat to the point that he was sent to the hospital by ambulance with a concussion,” Jonathan Handman said in an interview. “He was in bad enough shape that they did a head and neck [CAT] scan.”
Jonathan Handman said his son was lured into a laundry room at the Fort Benning Army base by other soldiers, knocked unconscious and beaten while he lay on the ground.
Michael Handman enlisted in the Army earlier this year. He wears a yarmulke with his uniform, which apparently led his drill sergeants to refer to him as a “fucking Jew” and a “kike” and a demand that he remove the yarmulke during dinner, according to his father. The soldier recently wrote a letter to his mother Randi recounting the anti-Semitism he has endured by his drill sergeants and members of his platoon since arriving for basic training at Fort Benning.
“I have just never been so discriminated against/humiliated about my religion,” Michael Handman wrote his mother. “I just feel like I'm always looking over my shoulder. Like my battle buddy heard some of the guys in my platoon talking about how they wanted to beat the shit out of me tonight when I'm sleeping. It just sucks. And the only justification they have is [because] I'm Jewish. Maybe your dad was right...The Army is not the place for a Jew.”
A Fort Benning public affairs representative would not comment on the incidents saying the attack and the anti-Semitism are under investigation. Michael Handman’s father said in an interview he fears for his son’s safety and is worried that his son may continue to endure additional beat downs and taunts about his faith by drill sergeants.
“I’m scared he will become a victim of friendly fire.” Jonathan Handman said. “The Army is not doing enough to protect him. They have mentally broken him to the point that he is willing to ruin his life by getting a dishonorable discharge.”
After he was released from the hospital, Pvt. Handman was sent back to the same platoon to face the soldiers who attacked him. He was then moved to a different company within the same platoon. But Jonathan Handman said his son told him the anti-Semitism has continued, according to a conversation he had with his son.
A week ago Jonathan Handman took action and began a fierce letter writing campaign in an effort to get his son some help. He reached out to his state's U.S. senator, Saxby Chambliss, the Republican of Georgia. Chambliss immediately contacted the Pentagon to investigate and, surprisingly, the Department of Defense sent Chambliss a detailed letter last week confirming that Pvt. Handman was the victim of anti-Semitism.
“Based on [Private] Handman’s statement and the seriousness of the allegations, the command immediately initiated a commander’s inquiry,” stated a Sept. 26 letter sent to Chambliss by Samuel Selby Rollinson, the Department of the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff. “Based on the inquiry, the Army found that two [non-commissioned officers] inadvertently violated the Army Regulation concerning the free exercise of religion by requiring the Soldier to remove his yarmulke and by using inappropriate terms when referencing the Jewish faith.
“While the actions of the NCO’s were not meant to be malicious, and were done out of ignorance for regulations and cultural awareness, this does not excuse their conduct. The command intends to reprimand both NCO’s for their conduct; require them to present formal blocks of instruction on what religious are authorized for wear; and finally, the battalion chaplain will instruct all cadre members on the Army policy concerning religious accommodation.”
The investigation by the Pentagon was limited to the anti-Semitism and did not include an inquiry into the beating.

Before anything else, we should notice that there were no coverups or coverup attempts.
Stuff happens. The drill sargeants specialise in being cruel macho tough guys and the cadets got the message that its okay to harrass a Jew. But I'm happy the pentagon responded so mentchlich and agreed right away to displine the officers and do what needs to be done so it won't happen again
(Just FYI there aren't a lot of orthodox yeshiva boys in the army so its much more a misfit and a culture clash than anything else.I'm sure there are many non-yarmulke- wearing jews in the army that don't have problems.)

Are they saying.Army found that two [non-commissioned officers] inadvertently violated the Army Regulation?
Only two out of a whole platoon that is guilty for not coming forward on this from day one.
I thought our Army is a rightous one after all arent we fighting the same cause?
Everyone in that platoon that had a hand in the beating or cussing jew boy should be repremended.
This is racist and has no place on the USA

As a former enlisted u.s. army soldier (since baal tsuvah) I will say that cursing and insults are definitely a part of basic training (I also did basic in Georgia). I was called nose, jew boy, etc...BUT EVERYONE was also cursed at depending on their religion etc... my first seargant from arkansas said to me G-d ****, I never met a Jew before!! Clearly no place for anti-semitism but as a whole I never experienced ANY anti-semitism (I was also stationed in Germany for 3 years).

I was a nineteen year old volunteer in the fall of 1966, brought to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and it was quite a culture shock. I was never away from home for any period of time before and I am an only child now surrounded by hundreds of other young soldiers. I come from a traditional Jewish home but not a very observant background. I remember asking to go to "services" and the main Sargeant in charge of my training brigade said "I can't tell you no, but I strongly recommend you don't." Well, I did go and I found that many of my Jewish brethren came to services to be amongst people who they could relate to, as we were all having a problem relating to the Army and the deep south of 1966. Many of the Sargeants delighted in mispronouncing peoples' names and particularly the ones of Italian heritage. They knew that this would definitely get their goat. Was there anti-semitism? Absolutely! At Ft. Jackson, there was a doctor incarcerated (who was Jewish) because he refused to train green berets on moral grounds. Because of this, the anti-semitism was fueled. The story above needs to be concluded with the severest of punishment for those guilty of the actual beating and for those above them, that have closed their eyes to this terrible injustice. I understand that wearing a yarmulka will set a soldier apart in the U.S. Army, but if they allow it, then no one else has a right to question it or ridicule it. I hope some of our self-serving senators can find the time to come to the aid of this recruit and make sure that he is treated properly and that punishment is doled out.

There is a very popular movie I saw once about a mexican guy ("Willy Santiago")who had the same mistreatment and bullying happen to him in the US Navy. Its called "a Few Good Men".
It helps you gain a perspective on the whole thing. Its very emotional. (There the story focuses on the system of cover ups in the military )

To Proud American @2:44 - that is a disgusting thing to say. And what if one of the soldiers killed happened to be the type of person who defends those who face discrimination - as most of our soldiers would - or if he or she happened to be Jewish? I guess some people need all ten days to make teshuvah - how will you ask forgiveness of the families who've lost their sons for making such a repulsive comment?

This has been from my understanding a problem for at least two centuries in the military and it will not stop. I've really come to realize that even in the organization that prides itself as a beacon of tolerance and a democratic tool, may not be so and us Jews sometimes have to rely on ourselves only. The army has lost my re-enlistment and I have talked about these experiences to many other Jews, especially orthodox Jews to go the IDF or at least take into consideration this ongoing problem. I am proud of my service for the most part, but was it worth the problems I encountered? Probably not.
I am proud of my country and Israel for being at the forefront in the fight against extreme cruelties from a savage enemy, it’s a shame some of the same anti-Semitism is being fought in distant lands as it is within!

I am a SPC in the 3ID stationed in GA, just returned from Iraq and an orthodox Jew who wears his yarlmuke daily to all formation etc...
I really can't remember a single day in my so far three year enlistment in the United States Army of the 21st century. Although most attacks or verbal jibes are pointless and usually harmless, it is a testament to the type of recruit that makes the ranks of the military. In Basic Training, I had the same thing happen to me and I know how hard it can be in a situation where you literally live with 200 other recruits (kids) in one small building. The difference is that as these bigot thugs would try to lure me into a situation where fists were flying, I would threaten them as well that I would kill them in the middle of the night. It was literally the only option. I survived the 16 weeks. I later moved on to another unit and earned the respect of more seasoned soldiers at the duty station I'm assigned to. During Basic, my drill sergeants were also unusually unfair towards me (although their nature is to be unfair for training purposes). I fought the yarlmuke issue the whole time and decided after weeks of harassment to take the yarlumke off as not to make a further chilul Hashem (desecration of G-d's name). In Iraq I did not wear a Yarlmuka outside of large more secure bases as prescribed by my Rabbi as it would further endanger my comrades and I. Sometimes I see a connection between the Americans I work with here in the States and the Iraqis who eventually did find out I was an orthodox Jew. I was also not allowed to eat anything else besides protein and nutrient deficient Kosher MRE's ONLY, where I lost about 15 lbs by the end of the 16 weeks training. I was not allowed to include a glass of milk or eat fruit the whole time I was there.

What a horrible thing to say....I would not want any mother, wife, father, husband, children to have to go through the loss of a loved one. You don't hate people because of a few bad eggs....how can someone be a proud American and spout such a hateful line. I am Jewish and was an Army wife for 20+ years I met some of the best men and women in the world, am proud to know them and to have traveled the world with them. I want to see all of our U.S. soldiers come home safe and sound.....

That is a pretty sick reaction.
There always will be some anti-Semites. America is not immune to this problem.
However, I continue to be thankful to G-d for the USA and for every kindness He showers on the USA.
Frankly, I am ashamed of such comments and shocked to find it on a Jewish blog. My grandfather was a student of the Chofetz Chaim OB"M and he instilled in us at a very early age the heartfelt appreciation he had for the USA.
He was not a dreamer and did not live with his head in the clouds or buried in the sand. He knew the limits to which we were welcome here when he arrived and also marched to the White House among the 400 Rabbis who came to ask FDR to help the Jews being gassed in Europe by bombing the rail-lines, so he knew first hand that there was also anti-Semites working within the US gov't. However, that does not lessen in any way, shape or form the fact that the American people are the most charitable and welcoming nation on earth.
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein OB"M referred many times to the USA as a "medina shel chesed' - A nation of kindness.
Writing such a thing as the comment above is one of the lowest things I've seen, even on the internet.

many years ago, my father worked for the US government, he was sent to work in another country, and , since this was before the advent of the homeschooling movement, we kids were sent to "government school", similar to public schools in the states. This was on an army base, and all kinds of kids whose parents were in the military (various branches) or whose parents were civilian employess of the us govt went to this school. My brother had it bad here.Playing monkey in the middle with his yarmulka, head flushed in the toilet repeatedly....Even the principal stopped my brother from entering the cafeteria with his head covered (against military regulations to wear a hat indoors). My parents had to go to school and inform the principal about religious freedoms that the military was supposed to represent and fight for!!! (this was during the Viet Nam war era). AND my parents threatened a law suit for not protecting my brother against the bullying, too. Not a good time. This was elementary school, so I can only imagine what basic training is like.
BTW, I appreciate very much hearing the news of the day, but would have appreciated the story more if the offensive language could have been written b'loshon naki. I know all the words and what they mean, and can fill in the blanks, don't need to have them spelled out!

when i was serving in the israeli army a russian immigrant kid and his friends began drawing swastikas on their hands and parading them around the french kids. in the end a one of the frenchies caught the butt of an m-16 to the nose. there were kids in my immigrant base with "nazi" looking tattoos. there are many incidents like this in the IDF with russian soldiers and swastikas. i dont believe anti-semitism should deter jews from joining the American army which jews have served in since the civil war [and probably before too]. they just need to combat anti-semitism, psychically and with lawyers.

response to 24 & 25
there is no doubt that if this were a soldier of a different race, it would have been subject to UCMJ immediately. In the US army, every other "minority" makes the "majority" look slim. Jews and Mormons are the only real minorities left in the military but not many people know about the Mormons as they do about the wealthy and superior Jews. I only say this as most attacks (usually verbal) revolve around such ignorant notions of how we never had to earn anything on our own and that we get a free pass in society. Just today I had to deal with at least 10 jibes (half of which were from another "minority') and an NCO who tried desperately to make me work on Shabbas morning, thereby neglecting me from driving to a Jewish community to observe shabbat.
In response to the comment about orthodox Jews shouldn't join the US Military but should opt for the IDF... I have given advice to over 30 orthodox jews wishing to enlist but have never told them straight out I know what's best for them. I can only relate my own experience to them. It is not halachically asur, but I'm sure it is not recommended either.
There are still a lot of very decent people in the armed forces but it is too large and it's ranks full of ignorant and indifferent leaders that this problem WILL NEVER BE SOLVED, it's the 3000 year old story alive and well inside the ranks of the "greatest army on the planet".

The real story is that the Drill Sergeant was just uninformed (which is pretty crazy since we get these types of religious briefings all the time) on what the Soldier was allowed to wear in the mess hall. When you go into a mess hall you're not allowed to wear a hat or any type of headgear (except for a drill sergeant hat if you're a drill sergeant) so when the drill sergeant saw his yarmulke he told him to take it off. As for the other Drill Sergeant calling him a juden, Drill Sergeants get pretty pissed off being around PVTs all the time, working extremely long hours, and seeing all the crazy shit the PVTs try to pull. He probably said this without thinking about it, which was pretty retarded. As for the Drill Sergeants calling the Soldier a Kike and other such things, that never happened. That's just some bullshit somebody threw into the story to make it sound crazier. And as for the kid getting beat up by other PVTs, that had nothing to do with his religion. That Soldier is just an asshole. He got beat by another PVT for being an asshole. It happens, PVTs aren’t watched 24/7. At least not at week 5, pretty close to 24/7 but not quite.
